Cry Wolf by Patricia Briggs ~A Review

Summary: Charles saves Anna from her abusive Chicago pack only to realize she is an Omega, a valuable member to any pack. He also realizes that she is his mate. They leave for Montana together to start building their relationship and start the search for a rogue werewolf who is killing in the mountains.

 *This may be the first book in the Alpha and Omega series, but you SHOULD read the Alpha and Omega novella before attempting this book and I would also suggest reading the first Mercy Thompson book as well (Not necessary, but it will help this book make more sense).

I gave this book a 2.75 out of 5 stars

So, I am currently participating in the OWLs Magical Readathon (this is the second round). This is a readathon hosted by G from Book Roast on Youtube (she will be linked at the end of this post, as per usual). I used this book as my Charms book whose prompt was to read an adult book. As I am reading this series chronologically and I had already read the book and novella prior to this, I decided this was the perfect opportunity to pick this book up. I had had a mildly positive experience with both Moon Called (the first Mercy Thompson book) and the novella (which I listened to via Overdrive), I was keen on reading and learning more about Anna and Charles. Also from previous experiences with Urban Fantasy, I usually find that books get better and better, so that got me really excited.

Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book as much as I had thought. About half, if not more of this book was faffing around. In the novella, Charles realized that his wolf has chosen Anna's as his mate. When the novella ends, Charles and Anna have only known each other for about a day and a half? This causes a problem when they move in together. The first chunk of this book is them attempting to work on relationship problems. Charles believes that if the inner wolves have chosen each other, the human side shouldn't have any problems (I guess this is the reverse of what usually happens, so I can see why he would think that). While the human sides do seem to be attracted to each other, Anna has come from extreme abuse (all of which is talked about in the novella...which you should read...haha). She has a hard time with men, especially alphas, because of all of the physical, mental and sexual abuse, a thing that Charles doesn't really seem to get. He saw the conditions she was in and when she doesn't return his affections or flinches away from him when she thinks it's going to get sexual, he gets super butt hurt about it. It's frustrating to read. Especially for 100+ pages.

I also didn't really connect too hard to the characters. We didn't really get to meet Charles in Moon Called. He was mentioned a few times and I think he made a cameo? Then we only had 42 pages of Anna. That is not really enough time to get to know her. We didn't have a lot of time with Bran either (Charles' Dad), so I had had a hard time caring about him...or Asil...or Sage....or anyone really (I must also mention that I didn't read any other novella other than Alpha and Omega, so I don't know if I would have different feelings...). It's really hard to enjoy a book when you don't really care about the cast inside it.

The pacing of the book was also atrocious. There was a plot about a rogue wolf...but I kept forgetting about it until it would randomly pop up again. It was the most interesting thing that was happening, so I was disappointed when it felt like an after thought.

I was a lot more excited when the action started picking up after halfway through. Unfortunately I would have had more fun if it was paced better. I was pretty over the book by the time the fun started, so that was a bit of a bummer. I was anticipating the end, so I wasn't 100% invested. The plot did get more complex than I thought it was going to get, which was great, but because the pacing was so bad, it was over very quickly.

My feeling for the characters started to grow a bit more by the end of the novel as well. Initially I felt they were in the way of the plot progressing, but as the plot progressed, they started to feel more important to the story (does that even make sense? Haha). Asil ended up being a really cool and complex character and I ended up falling in love with Bran. I hadn't really enjoyed him too much in either story, but a bit more of his backstory was given to us and now I enjoy him a lot more (I also haven't read all of the novellas, so I don't know if my feelings would have been stronger or not). Sage also seems like a cool character too and I'm interested to see how they all progress in the next books.

In the end, I think a 2.75 is a fair rating. I enjoyed the last bit and the end, but the beginning was exhausting...I did read that some of the kinks have been ironed out in the second book and I'm cautiously curious about it. I will be taking a break before I attempt to pick it up.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor -- Review

Summary: Karou is an art student at a university in Prague. She also doesn't know who she is but that's cool because she works with Chimera...and then she sees a hot angel. Wow.


It says I gave this a 3.5 on goodreads, but I think this is more of a 3 star read. I reviewed this on my channel, but I can't remember what I said because I have the attention span and the memory of a hyper active fish (which is not very long...just to clarify)

I had heard a lot about Laini Taylor over since I started watching booktube videos in 2013. She is quite the popular author. I hadn't experienced her writing until I read a short story she did for My True Love Gave to Me (a collection of short winter love stories edited by Stephanie Perkins). Her story was beautiful and haunted my very soul. I cried a bit and it just stuck with me. I thought it was amazing and to this day I can't get it out of my head. I immediately bought Daughter of Smoke and Bone...but I never picked it up...I was too scared to. What if it was a fluke? After getting Overdrive (an app where I can get free audiobooks from my library), I decided that I should finally read this book.

The likes:

The thing about Laini Taylor is that she is a beautiful writer. The way she tells stories is amazing. The world was so well written that I felt like I was there. I really loved the way her stories have a fairy tale quality to them. They just feel so...familiar and comforting. I loved the fantastical elements to this book as well. As it is a fantasy, it had some mythical creatures in it. Chimera, creatures that are half human and half animal. I loved learning about them and how they worked. Fascinating.

Dislikes.

I hated soooooooo much about this book though...It started out so good. Then she met Akiva...Akiva is an angel who is trying to kill the Chimera...And she sees him and he sees her and kira kira eyes happen (that is japanese for sparkle eyes)

No thank you. I really don't like instalove. It is soooooooooooo annoying. While yes, for those of you who have read it, I know there is a reason for why it happens...but that doesn't mean I have to like it. And I don't. I hate instant attraction. I know it is possible in real life, but this was just...ugh...My eyes rolled so hard that I may have been able to see my brain for a little bit.

Then there was the fact that the last 50% of this book was a flashback. I don't know if I have ever made it apparent...but I usually abhor flashbacks. They are ok when they are done well...and I find that they rarely are. This was a flashback disaster for me. This would have been better as a 1.5 instead of a chunk of the book. I understand why it was there, but she could have given us some information and then put the rest as a separate book. I was so bored and I was taken 100% out of the story. I was so annoyed and I didn't really care. It was really hard to care once the flashbacks started...and then the uber romance between Karou and Akiva...and the fact that the book went from a fantasy to a YA romance. Not what I signed up for...not what I wanted. It was frustrating that the book went in this direction when, again, it had started out so strong.

As I usually do when I read audiobooks, I'm going to review that as well. The narrator, Khristine Hvam, was amazing! She had so many amazing voices and never once did I not know who was talking. Her accents were fantastic and she was such an enchanting speaker that I couldn't help but keep listening, even though I hated the story. Her narration and voices perfectly matched Laini Taylor's lyrical writing style. I loved her. I would totally listen to more books narrated by her.

So there you have it. My unpopular opinion on a well loved book.  Naturally I will not be continuing the series. With the way the book ended, I can see where it is going to go and I'm not excited to actually read it. So I am not going to torture myself with that. How is her other book series? Strange the Dreamer? If you have read it, let me know. I'm curious to see if it is something I will like or if it will do the same thing for me as this book did.

Absolute Boyfriend by Yuu Watase - A Series Review (Spoiler Free)

I rated this series about a 4.5 out of 5 stars (There are 6 volumes and it is a complete series)

This series is pretty cute. I was really craving a light shoujo series that doesn't take much thought and had a squee-worthy romance.  This delivered just that. For starters...I have been a huge fan of Watase Yuu's work for a long time. I think she writes amazing stories and her art style is perfection.  Her characters are adorable and her men are perfection.  I had started this series a long time ago, and recently decided to pick up the last three issues and binge read it. I have read bits of her other series and have enjoyed them as well, but this is the only one that I've finished.

I really enjoyed all of the characters. Riiko is your typical derpy, flat chested girl who feels like she needs a boyfriend and always gets rejected. You know, your standard shoujo female. I could see that she might annoy a lot of people, but I found her to be ok. For the most part. She definitely had her moments when I wanted to hit her (like her indecision over who she loved more).  The love interests were fantastic, and added a lot to the series.  This was the kind of series where you kind of wanted to cheer for both of the guys.

I was annoyed by the indecision that was the driving point of this series (I'm glad that it was short for that reason). I also like that the story wasn't all about sex. Yes, it was important, but a lot of the story is Riiko saying she isn't interested in sex until she falls in love (not lust). 

I think the best part was the ending though. It was a super bittersweet ending but I think it was well done.  And like I said, it ended at a good time. Any longer and I think I would have become disinterested.  All in all, I really enjoyed this series. It's nice and easy to read and full of good feels. Would highly recommend for lovers of shoujo manga!

I hope you pick it up at some point!

Boy was this manga disappointing on SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many different levels. 

Let us start out with a positive or two:

First of all, I liked the art. The cover art is pretty cute and the character designs and their outfits are fantastic...it was pretty hard to tell who was who though. I also really liked that this artist dressed up her characters in popular goth/punk/lolita brand names.  She mentioned h. naoto a couple of times and a lot of the girls who were going to the concert were wearing lolita clothing. Which I really enjoyed, and it initially got me interested in this manga.

Now for the negatives...

I thought this manga was going to be about the band. It was a main focus of the first part of manga but once Akira joins the band and they see the former leader off, the band doesn't really isn't a thing anymore.  I thought it was going to be Mizuki and Akira working to try and make the band good again, but it was insta-love and just really weird. I felt really awkward. 

The characters were also very wishy washy.  Akira flipped his character as soon as he joined the band and Mizuki was an odd character. Yes, she was tsundre, but I don't think she was a convincing one. But maybe that's just me. 

The thing that REALLY pissed me off was the amount of rape in this book.  Rape is never ok. I realize that Japan has some...interesting...views on rape. The whole, "we act like we don't want it, but we actually do," that's one thing..and it happens in this manga...but there are scenes in this manga where Mizuki is drugged and almost rapped by one of her female upperclassmen and then a male upperclassmen attempts to join in. After the attempted rape is stopped, Akira decides to get back at the woman who tried to rape Mizuki by having one of his guy "friends" rape her as revenge. His dad is a member of the yakuza so it's ok, right? No.  He didn't want to do it, but Akira promised him that if he raped her, he could touch him...ok....so I thought maybe he'd go to a certain point, prove that attempting to rape someone is bad and then leave. Well no. They didn't show it, but it was implied and it wasn't ok. Rape is bad, and it DEFINITELY shouldn't be used as a way to exact revenge or teach someone a lesson.  NOT OK.

Needless to say, I will not be continuing this series, nor will I be supporting the author or offering it as a suggestion for someone who wants to read manga.

I DNF'd this book at chapter 15, page 116.

I had soooo many problems with this book. Where to start...

The world, for one, was flat. The author name dropped place after place and didn't really give us a reason to care. I didn't even know where our story was taking place! I looked at the map several times and still wasn't sure which "C" country we were living in. They would talk about the Warrens, but we never got a good description besides shitty and shitty (literally). I think this author is obsessed with the way things smelled. So many different descriptions and mentions based on the way things smelled. It was too much...the world has more than just scent.

The characters were also flat...and tropey as F***. Cardboard has more personality than the characters in this book. I love books about assassins, ESPECIALLY the ones that have no feels (even if they eventually show that they have feels). But Durzo...boring. Azoth/Kylar (Really...Kylar (KILER))...boring. I don't even know who else I met, but 10/10 times...boring. So much so that I can't even remember meeting them. ^^' I could barely keep track of anyone either. Name drop after name drop...and no reason to care. We are introduced to Doll Girl in the beginning (I believe she becomes important later), and some horrible stuff happens to her...but I didn't care. Jarl, Azoth's friend, has some horrible stuff happen to him....didn't care. Azoth does some stuff...didn't care and Durzo, the emotionless killer with a heart of gold, had some stuff happen to him...still didn't give two shits. Also I didn't feel it was necessary to make every female a whore (with a heart of gold) (or a virginal wonder, as I found out in some of the reviews I read). It's just...blah.

The politics...I don't even know what is happening. I don't know the world or the characters, so this makes zero sense.

Magic...I didn't get that far....I know it was a thing that exists in this book, but I didn't really understand what I had read. Does not everyone know that magic exists in this world? Durzo talks about talents and mages, and I'm guessing not everyone has magic, but they must know it's a thing....right? I mean, I understand being an assassin and not flaunting whatever power/talent you have, but NO ONE has made any mention of ANYTHING! O-o Had I not known that there was some magic in this book, I would have had no bloody ideal. I know it's a low fantasy (or I believe it is), but wow. It's like he threw it in there to make it more fantasy or something. I dunno.

All in all, this book is not for me. I could see people who are new to fantasy enjoying this. I have heard that the beginning is kind of rough, but it really picks up in the middle. I have heard that it is a page turner and that it has some cool magic and some awesome plot twists, but seeing as I don't really care about the characters, this doesn't really excite me. I definitely seem to be in the minority when it comes to disliking this book, but in doing some research, those who didn't like it had the same problems I had. The book is a giant fantasy trope with zero character development, confusing politics and nonexistant world building. If you aren't going to give me an interesting world, give me good characters. I don't care if the plot is the most amazing thing I have ever read or if the action is orgasmic, if the characters suck, who cares about what happens to them. Light them all on fire, gut and murder them all with out any mercy, see what I care.

I know this review was super salty and maybe I missed something...I know I probably did...but yeah. This book was not for me. No hard feelings though. Will just move on to something else. That's just how I do.

This is officially one of my favorite books. I LOVED this book soooooooo much!! I laughed, I cried a bit, I sympathized and empathized with the characters and smiled though the entire book. I thought it was brilliant. And the little Auggie/additional character doodles are sooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute!! I originally heard about this book from Little Book Owl's channel on Youtube, and I bought it on a whim...actually it was a cover buy. I love this cover!! >w<

Through a majority of the book, Auggie is the narrator. Auggie is hilarious. He is sarcastic, funny, takes things in stride, is incredibly deep and is OBSESSED with Star Wars. I loved all the nerdy Star Wars references and they even played a role in the story! XD That makes me super happy. XD Auggie knows he is different and he knows that his look is hard to get used to, but he takes everything in stride. He kids around with the way he looks and uses it to make other people more comfortable with him. We do see him lose his cool a couple of times though out the book, but we also see how strongly he bounces back from the issues. I think a lot of people could learn a lot from Auggie. 

One thing I wasn't sure about was the fact that the book was written in multiple points of view. I ended up enjoying it because it gave us some insight into the characters who interact with Auggie like; his sister Via, his friends Jack and Summer and some of Via's friends. I thought they would be annoying (Justin, Via's boyfriend was kind of annoying because he didn't use capitol letters or much punctuation, but he did end up being awesome XD), but they added a lot to the story. 

I honestly can't think of any problems with this book...at all...It is currently on my favorites shelf and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys contemporary and a feel good, heart warming book. READ THIS BOOK!! That is all. XD

A Clash of Kings! Review!! FINALLY!!!!

I FINISHED THIS!!! I feel so accomplished!! >w<  Because this is a difficult book to explain and the second book in a series, I'm not going to put the synopsis up and I'm going to keep this spoiler free. Just my thoughts!~

I must say, this book was only going to get 3 stars...but it did pick up a bit at the end. This book has 969 pages (without all the added stuff, which makes it 1,009) and I think the last...300 were good? I thought it was a lot of talking and not really any moving. The battle scenes were a bit of a jumble, but I suppose if you were actually involved in these battles, it would probably feel the way it was written. New characters were highlighted, such as Davos and Theon Greyjoy, and we got to meet both Stannis and Renly Baratheon, and new places needed to be described, so that got to be a bit...annoying. But necessary...I suppose.

Once things picked up....holy shit balls Batman! So much magic!! Dark magic, mostly and it made my head explode a bit. But I really liked it. I really love magic in fantasy novels, especially if it is dark and a bit unexpected. It was definitely unexpected. I really enjoyed Arya and Bran's chapters. Daenerys, Jon and Tyrion are my other favorites, but Jon's chapters were a bit meh Dany's were too few and Tyrion's were too many, so that's a bit of a bummer.

All in all, it was a pretty good book. It could have been better, but I think it was a good addition to the series. ^^ Also, I really love when books (and movies) mention the name of the book/series in the book. They mentioned 'a song of ice and fire' and I laughed. XD

Anyways, I am taking a bit of a break from this series. A Storm of Swords is bigger than this one, and my hands are screaming right now...so I'll wait. ^^'''

This is book 5/10 for my fantasy book challenge!! I'm half way there!!!
I have also read 7/25 books for my bookish challenge!~ Weeeeee!! I has feel accomplished!! XD

 This book......Holy shit.....This book.........I laughed, I cussed, I squee'd and face-palmed soooooooooooo many times. This book was so good, and so many things went down! Secrets and truths came out and a romance came into fruition~ So many good feels!! And then tragedy strikes and shit hits the fan.........and I just read it all with my jaw dropped. Like literally, my jaw was on the floor....the whole time. Holy shit balls.....The things that happen.......And the mysteries and secrets!! Let me just say, "OoO."

The characters, like always, are bloody brilliant. The character development just gets better and better. As secrets become known, we get a deeper understanding of our characters and how complex they are. I live for the characters in this book. I love every single one of them and I love hating the ones I'm supposed to hate. I'm super curious as to what happens to them next.

There wasn't as much world building in this book, but there was a lot more lore. We learn more about Elena and Gavin, heritage of the royal family, magic, the witches and the Fae. I love that we are finally getting more of a glimpse into the fantasy and the magical elements of this world and this series. We got a small taste of it in the first book, but the second one......All the magics!

So I made a post a couple of days ago fangirling about this series and how the next book, Heir of Fire, is coming out in September. After having finished this book.................................................Can't we just skip all those months and get to September already?!?!?!?! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I need it now...........T^T Why do the gods hate me so?! -3- (<---that's a sigh/pbbhhh face) I don't think I can handle the wait.....I pray to the book gods that I can get an ARC (advance reader's copy) so I have it...and then I can buy the finished copy because OBSESSION. O-O (lol)

I bloody hated this book.  I wanted sooooooooooooooo much to like this....but I didn't.....I hardly ever consider abandoning books before I finish them...but I thought about it...many times....and in full truth, I didn't actually read all of it.....I skimmed the last few pages of the last chapter and skipped the epilogue...I just couldn't do it anymore. I wanted to bang my head against a wall.....-_____-''' I had first heard about this book from Whittynovel's channel on Youtube. She raves about the series, has Jace's ring around her neck and is pretty much in love with the dude. I trust Whitney's likes, so I decided to read it....I am so sad I was disappointed....(she is a fantastic Youtuber though. Just saying).

I hate hate hate Clary...I despise her name, I loathe how she acts like she knows what's going on even though she's just being introduced to this world that she didn't know existed...she also just says dumb things....Jace was ok...but I wasn't really impressed. I liked him mostly because he was mean to Clary...and then he started to be nice to her...and the end.....-______- No....just.....no.....I would like to pretend the last couple of chapters of this book didn't happen.

I also hated how everyone just kind of seemed to accept situations that would shatter just about anyone's ideals of how things work. "Ehermahgerd, my mummy has been kidnapped!! I'm mad and sad and OH LOOK A CUTE BOY!!!! Holy shiz demons! I'm mad, I'm sad....I totally know about Shadowhunters even though I have never heard of them before...Also I can contribute to conversations about things I don't understand." GAH!!! SHUT UP!!! JESUS BALLS!! JUST SHUT UP!!! Also, I feel like characters freaked out about things that weren't even that bad.

I laughed at things that weren't funny, and literally face palmed my way though this book....I'm surprised that I don't have permanent red hand marks on my face.......I dreaded picking up this book...I knew I had to finish it, but I was like, "...merrr....do I have to???" It was like I was high school again forcing my way through assigned readings.....

My favorite part of this book....was a little pointless conversation in a diner when Jace says his new detective name is going to be "Hotschaft Von Hugenstein (194)."  I lol'd hard core.....It wasn't even important to the feckin story!!! >_____<

Needless to say, I will NOT be finishing this series.....I liked the concept...I liked the magical elements....but the execution....not my favorite....Please, if you have read this...and you liked it, PLEASE!!! I IMPLORE YOU!!! WHY DID YOU LIKE THIS!?!?! I seriously want to know. I am very curious about your thoughts on this book/series.

This book was bloody fantastic!! I could not put it down...even to sleep (sleep is for mortals anyway, lol). The book was fast paced, full of action, and the characters are fantastic. I loved each and every one of them. And the Lord Ruler! What a bad ass!!! XD There were so many twists and turns and just when I thought I had things figured out, BOOM!!! Another twist!! It was insane!! And the world!!! Wow my gosh!! Fan-friggen-tastic. And the magic!!!! LOVED IT!!! I felt like everything was well explained and rarely did I have to look in the back of the book for a quick reference.

I really liked the magical elements to this story. It's so different from other magical books I have read. The magic in this world is called Allomancy. You use it by burning metals in your body. Some make you alter people's emotions, some make you stronger while others help you fly by pushing and pulling on metals. So brilliant.

Character wise, I loved Vin, the street urchin. I think she's a wonderful character. She was very complex and I actually loved her battle between being the street urchin she's always been and the noblewoman she's pretending to be. Also, Kelsier is a fantastic character. Sometimes he really got on my nerves, but he's a great comic relief. The other characters of the crew are fantastic as well. I just....all the love. Lord Elend Venture is pretty awesome too~ I love how we really don't know his full intentions or feels through the book.

This book made me laugh, cry, yell, face palm, and gave me all the feels. I was shocked and surprised so many times! Brandon Sanderson is a fantastic author, and I need to read more of his books!! I NEED THEM!!!! I do have all of the series (I just haven't hauled them yet) and I am very excited to see how the rest of the books go!

Throne of Glass~ The REVIEW!!~~

Synopsis: Throne of Glass is about an assassin named Celaena Sardothien. She has been sent to the salt mines, a prison, for her crimes until she is freed by the crowned prince to fight in a competition tobecome the King's Champion.  The world has lost its magic and is now filled with corruption, dangers and a new threat. As something starts to kill off her competitors, Celaena has to find out who is killing everyone while fighting to win her freedom.

I. Loved. This. Book. I devoured it. I had first heard about this book on Regan's Youtube Channel PeruseProject. She raved about this book so much...I needed it....So when my Japanese club went to Chicago for a trip, I looked frantically for a Barnes and Noble. I was sad that I had to wait as long as I did to read it, but it was totally worth it. It was a page turner and had my interest from the first sentence. The characters are so interesting and Celaena is hilarious!! She is my spirit animal. Like if I was athletic, we'd be the same person. Both sarcastic, love to read, love frilly clothes and have the same eye and hair color. Also, we think a lot of the same things. In one part she mentions skinning a guy and I remember thinking, "Oh my gosh!!! I've threatened someone with that!!" (and now you all are probably scared...oh well..I'm a violent person. XD I just don't follow through with it. Haha)

The world that Sarah J Maas has created is really fantastic. I love all of it. It actually kind of felt...homey to me. Is that weird? Probably. I just love everything about this book. The love triangle in this book is also fantastic. It's not one of those in your face kind of things, which I usually find kind of annoying. I love the interaction between the characters in the triangle as well. 

I guess this book was mostly world building..which in retrospect, it was. But I loved the world, so I guess I didn't really notice it too much. The second book, Crown of Midnight, which I have coming in the mail, is supposed to be even better than this book......I CAN'T WAIT!!!! Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Also, I heard that this is supposed to be a seven book series...wow my gosh....I'm so excite!!!!

Red Branch--A Review!~

This book....Oh my goodness....This book. I was so reluctant to start it...I'm soooooooooo glad I did. I had been interested in Celtic Mythology for quite some time, but my knowledge of it is pretty non-existent. So my friend Sheri, who lives in Scotland, suggested I try out Morgan Llywelyn. I found it for 1 cent on Amazon.com and it's been sitting on my shelf for....a year or so? I regret it sitting there for so long! >___<

Synopsis: (this is from the back of the book) In ancient Erin, the line between the perceived world and the Otherworld sometimes faded away, and then people said gods walked the earth. One such, it was rumored, had fathered the silver-eyed boy Setanta (Shay-tahn-tah)-and when Setanta became a man and the battle rage seized him, he was indeed like a god, a terrible god of destruction. They called him Cuchulain (Koo-hul-in), the dreaded Hound of Ulster.

This is actually quite a complex story. Not only do we follow the story of Setanta, we also learn the story of Deirdre, the most beautiful woman in Ulster, who is prophesied to bring ruin to Ulster. Also we learn of the curses brought upon Emain Macha, (Ev-in Mah-ha) the main city in this story, and how the goddess Macha cursed the city to suffer birthing pangs every time they enter into an epic battle (which is hilarious). Also in this story, we see the duality between the Cuchulain "beast" and the sweet, fun loving Setanta. I have to say....Setanta/Cuchulain is a-freakin'-dorable. He's so playful and fun loving and he's terrified of women! There is a scene where he's just comes back from an epic battle where he uses the Rage and the king is worried that he will still be in beast mode. So he sets up a line of naked women at the gates so that when Setanta sees them he totally loses his battle rage and goes into full blown shy/blushy/look away mode. It was so cute! He is such a great character and Morgan Llywelyn just makes it so easy to love him.

I absolutely love Morgan Llywelyn's writing style. She writes so colorfully, I felt like I was in ancient Erin. Her characters are so loveable and well written and the humor she uses is fantastic. I tagged so many places in this book with post-its just because she made me hard core laugh out loud. She also got me so attached to all of the characters, that when something happened to them (be it a struggle or a death), you totally felt for them. I cried a few times...Shamelessly. Also I loved that she tried to keep as close to the original mythology as possible. She did so much research and that makes me love the story more (for some reason). There is even a bibliography in the back.

All in all, I loved this book and this author. I really loved the writing style and the new knowledge I gained about Celtic Myths. I have another book on my shelf, Druids, by her, and I am very excited to read that book as well. I would suggest this book to anyone who is interested in adult fantasy or Celtic mythology. I really hope you guys pick this book up!~

Leviathan~The Review!!~

This is another book that I had heard wonderful things about, but had no idea what it was about. I knew the words, "steampunk" and "WWI" and that's all. So, when I found it on Amazon.com for 1 cent, I thought, "...Meh! Why the heck not?!"

Synopsis: Aleksandar Ferdinand, Prince of Austro-Hungary's, parents were just murdered and he in on the run from his people, who have turned against him. Deryn Sharp is a British girl who is pretending to be Dylan (a male) so that she can fulfill her dreams of flying in the British Air Service. In this world, The Germans and the Austro-Hungarians are known as Clankers, and everything is mechanical and fully gunned. The British are Darwinists who have fabricated animals who they use as weapons. When the Leviathan (A flying fabricated British whale-ship) with Deryn on board meets Alek's Stormwalker, they begin a crazy adventure that will combine the forces of two waring nations.

I had a REALLY hard time getting into this book. I didn't really care too much about the characters, I already kind of know what's going to happen, as it is based on an actual event, and it was kind of slow going. Towards the end, I started to get into it. I think once Deryn and Alek meet, it gets better. Because of it's steam punk-ness, some of the battle scenes are hard to imagine and some of the creatures are hard to imagine as well. But there are some AMAZING drawings in this book (Thanks to Keith Thompson)! I loved getting to compare what I had pictured in my head, and what the artist/author had pictured in their heads. I felt very inspired by the art and the things mentioned in this book.

Because there are a lot of made up things, I found myself getting excited to see what new creatures we were going to meet next. Flying whale airships with entire eco-systems in them, Stormwalkers, messenger lizzards Huxleys and hydrogen sniffers. Each creature introduced, I found totally fascinating. I really hope we get to meet more in the other books!

I really didn't want to end up liking this book...It started off rocky and it was kind of slow going and I just wasn't 100% sold on it....but I did end up giving it 4/5 stars on Goodreads and I am VERY curious as to what will happen next. Even though it's based on WWI, it is different enough for me to continue reading. I will be picking up Goliath and Behemoth with my Christmas money (thanks Gramps!!!!) and I will let you know what I think about them when I get them read and such.

Legend--A Review!

So, this month, I thought I'd try out this book. I had heard a lot about Legend by Marie Lu, but I didn't really know what it was about. I find that if I know too much about a book, I'm less likely to read it because I feel like I already know the story. So I went in totally blind, and I must say, it paid off.

Synopsis: The story takes place in the former United States, now known as the Republic. June is a military prodigy from a rich family. Day was born in the poor, plague ridden sector. He is a wanted criminal for causing disturbances in the Republic. When June's brother was killed, with Day as the suspect, their paths cross as June hunts him down to get revenge for her brother's death. But when she starts to uncover truths about the Republic, June has to make some decisions about what side she's on.

This book was fantastic. I loved it so much. At first I didn't know how I felt about the characters. I thought June was an uptight, rich, army brat, and I thought Day was a soft and clumsy delinquent. But the world kept me interested. I thought that it was kind of cool that it had the plague in it as well. It wasn't just about the struggle between rich and poor. There was also this side problem of the plague. It did give me a Dishonored feeling (it's a video game for those who don't know) with the plague and the rich plague-less people and Day gave me a Corvo vibe (in the sense that he doesn't do anything lethal....I guess that's kinda lame. XP). But anyways...I had a hard time connecting with the characters at first, and to be perfectly honest, I still don't feel 100% attached to them. I mean, I felt bad for their situations and I hoped the best for them..but meh. Hopefully I will feel more attached to them in the books to come (Prodigy and Champion). I also thought that a lot of the choices the characters made were very predictable. The plot was not as predictable, but the choices were. Like whether June was going to change her mind about Day. I mean...duh....-___-'

I really did like the plot twists (they weren't big, but they kept me interested) and I really liked the world building. Lu's writing is very straight forward. There isn't a lot of fluff added to it, which I actually appreciated. It was a heavily military book, so adding fluffy describing words would have been weird, I think. I just really enjoyed this book and I am very excited to see what happens in the other books! I will be picking up Prodigy and hopefully Champion with the money I got for Christmas (thanks Grandpa!!! <3). Esthetically, I really liked the fact that on Day's chapters, the writing is done in gold ink. I just think that is the coolest thing ever. It's little touches like that, that I love. I think it's cool. Good job Marie Lu. Good job.

Well, that's really all I have to say about Legend! I really enjoyed this book and I want the next two books in the series! <3 <3

Number The Stars~ A Review

 I had read this book a long LONG time ago when I was in 7th grade. I had been looking for it in thrift stores for years and years, but never found it. Until my last trip! I was so excited!!! After reading a heavy book like The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, I still wanted to read a WWII book, but something that was lighter. My memory of this book was WAY off...it was like I was reading it for the first time.

Synopsis: This story takes place in Copenhagen, Denmark. Denmark has surrendered to the Nazis because they knew they wouldn't be able to fight the Germans. Slowly the Nazis start rounding up the Jews and Annemarie Johansen's best friend, Ellen Rosen and her family are in trouble. Annemarie's family takes in Ellen and hides her from the Nazis by pretending she's their daughter and smuggle her out of the city, hopefully to safety.

This book was totally different from The Book Thief. It's a lot lighter (it IS for younger people), and it focuses on a different aspect of WWII.  First off, it takes place in Denmark. Which I think is really cool. Also, they talk a lot about the resistance, which I think is a nice something new. Also, because it is a children's book, it has a happy, non-depressing ending. Which actually suited me just fine. I think it's a great introduction to WWII for younger people.

Because it's nothing really spectacular, but still pretty good, I gave it 4/5 stars on Goodreads.

The Book Thief!~ A Review!~

I bought this book from my university bookstore on a whim. I had seen it many times on Youtube and it's one of Littlebookowl's favorite books. I thought that I'd give it a shot because I do enjoy Holocaust books...even though they are horribly depressing.

Synopsis: In 1939, Death is being kept busy by Nazi Germany. Death meets Liesel Meminger at her brother's grave and witnesses her steal a book, "The Grave Digger's Handbook." She ends up living with a foster family, where her foster father teaches her how to read. This starts her fascination with books and words. There are also many hardships during this time. Her family takes in a Jew, there is money shortages and bomb threats.

This book plays with all of your feelings...It really does. You fall in love with the characters right away. Mama and her cussing, Papa and his kindness, Liesel, Rudy (my favorite), and Max. Zusak's writing style makes you feel like you are there in Molching, on Himmel street, feeling the joys of childhood and the hardness of war. His style of writing is so interesting and colorful.  It was just really interesting and I really felt connected to everyone. And he is soooooo good with making you happy and content and then making you remember this is a WWII Holocaust book....Oh the tears. So sad. I REALLY want to see the movie...I bet it's amazing. If you don't mind the feels, or if you like books that give you the feels, READ THIS BOOK!!!! I really want to try some of Zusak's other books. I know one of them is I Am the Messenger. It looks really interesting.

Antigoddess!!!!~ The Review!~

 This book....Oh em gee....this book. This is Antigoddess by Kendare Blake. I got this a while back from Goodwill and it was one of the first books I read in October. I had just finished The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan, and I needed some more gods in my life. If you know me in real life, you would know that I love mythology. Especially Greek mythology. I knew this book was supposed to be violent and bloody, so I thought it would be perfect for October.

Synopsis: Gods are supposed to live forever, so you can imagine their shock when they all start getting sick and dying. Athena's body is slowly being filled up with feathers and her brother Hermes is slowly wasting away. Athena and Hermes are desperate to find out why the gods are suddenly dying off, but when a dying Demeter sends them off to find a reincarnated prophetess named Cassandra, they find out they aren't the only ones searching her out. Cassandra has no idea that the gods exist, nor does she realize she used to be involved with them in her past. She then finds herself tangled up with the gods and fighting for her life and trying to save the gods as well.

I loved this book so much. It was violent and gory and dark....sooooooooooooo dark! I loved it!! I want the second one sooooooo badly!!! Ahhhhh!!!! I really have no bad things to say about it. I laughed, cried, butt clenched!! So many feels! I loved all the characters, the good ones, the bad ones, and learning about how each god was dying. Fascinating!!! I just love this book so much!! This is probably the worst book review ever....If you love Greek mythology, you love violence and action, just read this dang book!! >___<

Uglies -- A review

A while ago in a Goodwill haul, I got this ratty hardcover of Uglies by Scott Westerfeld (they even spelled his name wrong on the spine XD). I ate this book up. I read this in about 3 days. It was a pretty fast read, but it was also really good.

Synopsis: In this world, at the age of 16, everyone turns pretty. They get a surgery, a whole new wardrobe and party it up in New Pretty Town. After losing her best friend to the pretties, Tally Youngblood, befriends Shay, who seems to be reluctant about turning pretty. Shay decides to leave the city and head out into the wilderness and live like people did in the old days. After Tally turns 16, a few days after Shay leaves, she gets taken in by the Specials and told she has to find Shay, or else stay ugly forever. But on her adventure to find Shay, Tally learns some things about becoming pretty that rocks her world. (Taken from Goodreads.com)

At first I was unsure about the characters....I couldn't relate to Tally or why she would want to become pretty. I related more to Shay. I thought Tally was childish and immature and I just didn't like her. After she leaves to go find Shay and she starts to experience the outside world, my feelings for her change a bit. There was some suspense and some unexpected things that happened in this story, but I thought it was pretty predictable. That was my other problem with this book. But I thought it was pretty good otherwise. I really enjoyed Scott Westerfeld's writing style. He has some very interesting ways of describing things. My favorite line is one of the first lines of this book, "The early summer sky was the color of cat vomit. Of course, Tally thought, you'd have to feed your cat only salmon-flavored cat food for a while, to get the pinks right." Totally gross, but I appreciated the oddness of it and it totally grabbed my attention. It's off color things like that that I really appreciate about Westerfeld's writing. ^^

Really, there isn't too much else to say about this book. It wasn't my favorite book I've ever read, but I did enjoy it. I am very curious to see how the series progresses. I currently have Pretties sitting on my TBR shelf and I will probably read it very soon. If you are interested in reading it, I would say pick it up! Give it a shot!~

Blue Bloods! A review!!

 This series, guys, this series......I love it soooooooooooo much!!!! Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz. It really doesn't get talked about a whole lot though...Which is very unfortunate. This is my second time reading this book, and it's even better the second time. I missed soooooooooooooooo many things!!! >___< I just got the 7th book not too long ago, but I couldn't really remember what happened, so I thought I'd reread the series.

Synopsis: Now...this book can be a bit hard to explain, so I'm going to quote the back of the book.

"Schulyer Van Alen has never fit in at Duchesne, her prestigious New York City private school. She prefers baggy, vintage clothes to the Prada and pearls worn by her classmates. But when she turns fifteen, Schulyer's life changes dramatically. The death of a popular schoolmate haunts her in unexpected ways. There is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much going on in this book. There is Schuyler trying to survive at her private school, the death of a classmate, finding out she's a vampire, figuring out what's happening to her new vampire family and just so many things. There is action, mystery, and catty teenagers with supernatural powers. I'm not a huge fan of catty teenage high school problems...Honestly, things like that annoy the crap out of me. But the characters are so...interesting and fabulous...And Melissa de la Cruz just makes them all so wonderful!~ She is such a wonderful author. She makes you love to hate Mimi Force and her clones and her fabulous life and the conflicts within the story frustrate and make you curious as to how it's going to be resolved.

Also I LOVE that it's a totally new take on vampires. I don't really know if I want to spoil how they become vampires, but let's just say, I love it. It's very interesting, and it just makes the conflicts/battles that happen all the more interesting. I just...I don't even know what else to say about this book....it's just.....READ IT!!!!!
